چکیده

the recognition of apoptotic cells by phagocytes is a complex, yet highly orchestrated event. Many receptors have been identified that recognize phosphatidylserine (pS; Fig 1)—which is exposed on early apoptotic cells—leading to downstream signalling and apoptotic cell engulfment. in this issue of EMBo reports, the receptor for advanced glycation endproducts (ragE) is described as a new pS receptor on alveolar macrophages that participates in the clearance of apoptotic cells (He et al, 2011).

Receptor for advanced glycation end products binds to phosphatidylserine and assists in the clearance of apoptotic cells.

Clearance of apoptotic cells is necessary for tissue development, homeostasis and resolution of inflammation. The uptake of apoptotic cells is initiated by an 'eat-me' signal, such as phosphatidylserine, on the cell surface and phagocytes recognize the signal by using specific receptors. In this study, we show that the soluble form of the receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) bind...

Receptor for advanced glycation end‐products‐mediated inflammation and diabetic vascular complications

Exposure of amino residue of proteins to reducing sugars, such as glucose, glucose 6-phosphate, fructose, ribose and intermediate aldehydes, results in non-enzymatic glycation, which forms reversible Schiff bases and Amadori compounds. A series of further complex molecular rearrangements then yield irreversible advanced glycation end-products (AGE). The aldehydes, highly reactive AGE precursors...

Receptor for Advanced Glycation Endproducts (RAGE), Its Ligands, and Soluble RAGE: Potential Biomarkers for Diagnosis and Therapeutic Targets for Human Renal Diseases

Receptor for advanced glycation endproducts (RAGE) is a multi-ligand receptor that is able to bind several different ligands, including advanced glycation endproducts, high-mobility group protein (B)1 (HMGB1), S-100 calcium-binding protein, amyloid-β-protein, Mac-1, and phosphatidylserine. Its interaction is engaged in critical cellular processes, such as inflammation, proliferation, apoptosis,...

RAGE and tobacco smoke: insights into modeling chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive condition characterized by chronic airway inflammation and airspace remodeling, leading to airflow limitation that is not completely reversible. Smoking is the leading risk factor for compromised lung function stemming from COPD pathogenesis. First- and second-hand cigarette smoke contain thousands of constituents, including several ...

Thiazolidinediones reduce endothelial expression of receptors for advanced glycation end products.

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are critically involved in atherogenesis in diabetes by binding to receptors for AGE (RAGEs) in vascular cells, thus inducing the expression of proinflammatory mediators. In animal models, interruption of the AGE-RAGE interaction reduces lesion size and plaque development. Therefore, limiting RAGE expression might be an intriguing concept to modulate vascu...
